Newsletter #47 — BISAC Categories
BISAC Categories — A week or so ago my editor and I were having our weekly Zoom meeting when we realized that we needed to update the BISAC categories for The F Words. BISAC stands for Business Industry Standards and Communication. The BISAC choices a book is listed in helps sell it to people who are specifically looking for books in that category. One of the early categories the publisher listed for The F Words was "Young Adult Fiction: Boys and Men." Another was "Young Adult Fiction: Coming of Age."
But as my editor and I went through all the categories, we realized that many others apply equally well, or maybe even more so. Thus we now have The F Words also listed (under the umbrella of Young Adult Fiction) in Diversity and Multicultural; Family Multigenerational; Poetry; Activism and Social Justice; Friendship, and several more. And, as you can see by the art accompanying this newsletter, I have already begun creating flyers for each of the new BISAC listings.
An Ill Wind —The November 5 event at which I spoke on "The Power of F Words" had very sparse attendance, probably due to the fact that the entire day was one of High Wind Warnings. Indeed, as I drove to the event the winds were gusting from 25-60 mph. I think that fewer than 25% of those who had signed up for the day's events attended.
As an attendee, I enjoyed the presentation on using social media to publicize one's books, particularly because I learned of a scheduling service called SocialOomph — which I intend to investigate. Marketing takes a lot of time, and if a scheduling service can do a good job of it and thus give me back some of my writing time, I would like that very much.
Becoming One with the Universe — It appears that I have at long last become one with my subject matter. A couple of weeks ago I received two emails that addressed me as Earl Derr Biggers. Here's one of them.
Good morning Earl Derr Biggers,
How are you?
I found you through your Seven Keys to Baldpate Illustrated book which you published at amazon and I hope that you have been enjoying your book.
October Rules —Here is my November 15 blog.
