Newsletter #19 — Readings, Rantings, and Pigs
Read Aloud Illinois — Back in January or February I signed up for the SCBWI Read Aloud Illinois event. SCBWI is Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, an international association of people who write or illustrate for children. The Illinois chapter sponsors many events for writers and teachers, helping get books into schools.
In 2021, for the first time, SCBWI-IL received a grant to sponsor a one-day "read aloud" event for Illinois schools. As I said, I signed up for this back in January or February. Publicity is now live, and Illinois teachers can sign up to have an author of their choice read to their class. This is a virtual read, not an in-person reading. But it's live, not recorded ahead of time.
Teachers have until September 16 to ask an author to read to their class. If I receive an invitation to read and talk about The F Words, I'll be sure to report it.
Warehouse Ranting — So . . . my publisher wants me to pick up 120 copies of The F Words at the warehouse (2 miles away) so that I can sell them at Printers Row Lit Fest. I am more than eager to do this! But when I had my weekly Wednesday meeting with my publisher today, she said that the warehouse keeps telling her they will not allow pickup at their docks — that the books must be shipped to City of Light Publishing in Buffalo, NY. And then, presumably, hauled back to Chicago in a van in time for Printers Row Lit Fest??? Do stay tuned for the outcome of this.
First Reader Review — Several days ago, the very first reader review of The F Words appeared. This one is on GoodReads.
Pigs in Literature — The work on The F Words has been so intense that I sometimes forget I've written other books. Here's an amusing podcast that relates to one of them, Sound Proof. After you listen to the podcast, you will enjoy the humor in the fact that this particular podcast has received twenty times the number of hits of my other podcasts. Apparently, Pigs Rule!
Thinking About F Words — Cole Renner, the protagonist of The F Words, not only writes poems about words that start with F — he also spends a lot of time thinking about these words. (I am spending a lot of time thinking about F words in relationship to the warehouse.)
